I generally stay away from birds when it comes to clay. Birds are graceful, mechanical, light, with thin, hollow bones. If I made bird sculptures, they'd be wire and straw and scraps of paper. But I was looking at my Beakbrains, and decided to give birds (and a set piece) a try again. I enjoyed making these, using the technique for fluffy feathers I used in Buzz Off and Warlord Shureg, and the set just wound up beautiful.

Here's another view... you can see more of the set, which is in the lid of a pickle jar.

Just as with the Beakbrains, the birds can come off their pegs and be switched around.

All in all, the Backyard Birds are about so big, compared to a Soda Can, which sometimes winds up in their habitat by mistake!

Bluebird of happiness?

The cardinal reminds me of a Shy Guy.

My Nixonic owl. If only owls really had eyebrows...
