Old Hand

After making the Hand Mask, which was very thin and spidery, I wanted to make a hand that was kuckly and gnarled and big.

The hand is made entirely from pinch-pots, in which I take a ball of clay and pinch it into a sort of bowl. I basically stacked these on each-other to make the fingers, poking holes to prevent air bubbles.

The entire hand is hollow. It is made from high-fire clay, and painted with glaze.

Whenever I present the hand, I wind up turning it over or around or balancing it differently every ten minutes or so. I enjoy how different it looks in each position.

This is one of my larger sculptures.
